Sakurai wants Mako, Mako wants Sakurai。 Manga’s over, right? Not in this genre! Not in this genre! It’s time for the rise and fall of lipstick, the school festival, the school roof, and, indeed, the after-festival dance。 But how much closer can these two get without merging into one being anyway? The story continues and the mangaka remains just as committed to making sure you are very, very aware of Mako’s perspective on his potential partner (and the author’s, of course)。 Her chest region is front and centre for many a full-page drawing。And, ironically, for a story that is very art-forward, this festival has some of the ugliest maid costumes I’ve ever seen in a manga。 It’s the first time that Sakurai has been anything but adored by the artwork。Everything else though? Spot on for what it’s trying to do。 This is, simply, a fun book。 It captures the sweaty nature of young love perfectly。 The only unrealistic part is the fact that they aren’t dating yet, but that’s how almost all these stories go。Mako is able to step up at times, but he is easily thrown off his game。 He’s got the hint, but he really needs the courage that he shows only intermittently。 The way he saves the day at the festival is no grand gesture, he’s just being a nice guy for the girl he likes, but it’s effective in its simplicity。It doesn’t help that Sakurai is just that little bit more extroverted than he is。 It’s a nice touch that he asks for the time, but Sakurai makes it pretty clear that the clock is ticking and if he doesn’t get his act together, well, she’s just going to confess to him。 I like Sakurai a lot as a character; art choices aside, she feels like a genuine teenager in love。The other thing that elevates this book is the spark between our leads。 Many of these types of manga are fun, many are more romantic。 Most of them are pretty turned down as far as actual raw emotion goes and have the chemistry of a bowl of candy corn。Less so here - you can feel the electricity between Mako and Sakurai sizzling on the page precisely when it’s supposed to be。 That rooftop scene might be “something out of a manga”, but it crackles with the knowledge that these two are not going to stay friends without becoming more。Add in Sakurai’s (useless) friends cheering her on, lots of little moments, that sort of thing, and you get a solid volume。 No, it might not be the best thing ever, but it’s still good at doing what it sets out to do。3 stars - genre enthusiasts only need apply, I suspect, but if you liked the first volume then you will be very well served by this one as well。 Another of the ‘good three stars’ manga。 。。。more
